What is Endocrinology?
Endocrinology is a branch of medicine and biology which deals with the hormone system of the human body. Hormones are vital to our body systems as they function to regulate the many different processes of our body. Human beings have more than 50 different hormones in the body and they each play a specific function either separately or collaboratively. They are produced and secreted by various glands and tissues present in the body. Some of the important processes that are regulated by hormones include homeostasis, metabolism, growth, reproduction, sensory perception and respiration. Most of the time, these hormones act as a chemical cue for the body that regulates the various processes.
Some of the common endocrine diseases include:
- Diabetes and its various complications
- Thyroid disorders
- Pituitary disorders
- Adrenal disorders
- Metabolic abnormalities
- Growth hormone deficiency
- Glandular cancers
Consultant Endocrinologists are physicians specialized in dealing with disorders related to the human endocrine system. They are able to provide professional diagnostic evaluation on symptoms and provide a treatment plan. The treatment plan usually involves long-term management of disorders whenever there is a deficiency or excess of hormones.
