What is Oncology?

Oncology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer. Cancer has always been one of the most difficult challenges faced by medical practitioners. In 2018 alone, there are an estimated 18 million cases of cancer around the world. This makes preventing and treating cancer is now one of the biggest challenges to public health. Cancer is caused when cells divide abnormally, rapidly, and uncontrollably. Further health complications occur when they spread to other parts of the body which can disrupt the patient’s various body systems. One of the most difficult challenges in cancer prevention is due to its sheer amount of risk factors which include genetic mutation, environmental factors, and personal lifestyle.

Some of the most common cancers that are affecting Malaysian men and women are:

  • Breast cancer
  • Cervical cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Stomach cancer
