Sinus Problems: Causes and Treatment

What causes Sinus Problems?

The sinus cavity is the empty space within your nose and head, in which it can get swollen, blocked or inflamed. When they do, patients usually experience a stuffy nose, and the area around the eyes and noses could become tender.

Sinus infections can be both acute or chronic. Acute sinusitis usually lasts for less than a month, while chronic sinusitis may have symptoms that last for more than 3 months. While usually not too serious, sinus problems do cause discomfort and inconvenience to the patient. Fatigue, light-headedness and minor headaches are also common side effects. For those that have a decreased sense of smell, they may not be able to enjoy food as much as they used to as well.

Acute sinusitis is largely caused by bacterial or virus infections such as the common cold or flu. Allergies or environmental factors such as smoke or haze may also cause sinusitis especially among young children. Chronic sinusitis may indicate an underlying condition such as nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum, respiratory tract infections etc. It is best for you to consult with an ENT specialist if you experience symptoms that do not improve or worsen.

Treatment for Sinus Problems

Treating sinus problems is not as simple as you may think. The doctor has to first identify the underlying cause of your condition, whether it is an infection or something else such as a nasal polyp or deviated nasal septum. Common treatments may be:

  • Decongestant and saline nasal washes
  • Antibiotics
  • Prescription intranasal steroid sprays
  • Topical antihistamine sprays or oral pills
  • Surgical correction if there are structural problems in your sinuses
