What to enjoy and avoid for Chronic Kidney Disease patients

Food choices for Chronic Kidney Disease when eating out :

Enjoy

Thosai (fermented Indian pancake) – This is good for gut health

Idli (steamed fermented rice cake) – This is good for gut health

Agar-agar, unflavoured – Low in calorie

 

Avoid

Pasembur – high in sodium

Burger – high in fats, sodium, phosphate

Banana fritter – high in fats, potassium

 

Tips when eating out:

  • Plan ahead or check on the restaurant menu in advance
  • Appropriate portion size (eg. protein) – to share your food with friends or family if it is served in large portions
  • Separate the gravy
  • Choose less salty, low potassium and low phosphate food
  • Bring own water bottle or self-measurement of fluid intake if there is any fluid restriction
